WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
325 W. ASH STREET
PIQUA, OHIO 45356
God calls Westminster Presbyterian Church to be fully alive and mature in
Christ Jesus, welcoming of all God's children as brothers and sisters.
WHAT WE
BELIEVE...
1) Presbyterians stress the sovereignty of God.
We believe that God is ultimately in control of our lives. While we
celebrate the gift of free will that our creator has given us, we affirm that
the Lord is "carrying" us and guiding us in the way he wants us to go.
This means, in practice, that the world is "not on our shoulders," that the
world and our place within it are overseen by a loving yet all-powerful
God.
2) Presbyterians stress the authority of the Scriptures as a guide to faith and
life. While tradition is helpful for understanding the Christian
faith, it is not the ultimate authority for our lives. "Sola Scriptura"
(Scripture) was the rallying cry for John Calvin, Martin Luther, and the other
reformers who founded Protestant Christianity over 400 years
ago.
3) Presbyterians stand for a faith informed by intellect, study, and reason. While reason
alone can never bring a person to faith, Presbyterians believe that faith and
reason are compatible, that God honors the serious, disciplined study of his
word and his world.
GREAT ENDS OF THE
CHURCH...
The six "great ends of the church: outlined in the
Book of Order of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
are:
1. The proclamation of the gospel for the salvation of humankind
2. The shelter, nurture, and spiritual fellowship of the children of God
3. The maintenance of divine worship
4. The preservation of the truth
5. The promotion of social righteousness
6. The exhibition of the Kingdom of Heaven to the world
As Presbyterians...
- we believe in experienced Christianity. We believe faith is a matter of both
the heart and mind. We seek to balance careful study of theology with a
passion for the Lord.
- we believe in Scriptural Christianity. We believe that the Bible is the
inspired word of God and understood to be "the unique authoritative witness" to
God's activities in the world.
- we believe in practical Christianity. We strive to make our faith a
part of everyday life and believe it should guild our behavior and
decisions.
- we believe in disciplined Christianity. God calls us to change and grow with
regular prayer, Bible study, attendance at worship, and love and service to
others.
- we believe in connectional Christianity. Each individual and Presbyterian congregation is knit
together in mutual concerns, responsibility, and support.
- we believe in an Ecumenical Christianity. We join hands with other Christians in doing
mission work to bring about God's kingdom here in our community and world.
